I've used Word, iWorks and OpenOffice. Word and OpenOffice are similar.

Best Free Word Processor For Mac Os X

I find the most recent OpenOffice quite good, though if you're doing collaborative work with people on a PC, you will probably want Word. OpenOffice requires X11. It's not hard to set up, but some people won't do it.

Pages is somewhat different. It is a combination of word processor and page layout. For an absolutely straight word processor, Word is more powerful. But for many projects the page layout features are useful, and iWorks can handle ligatures and some other features with OpenType fonts. I try to use Pages where I can, but for a long document I'd miss things like auto section numbering, cross references, etc. I'm hoping the next version of Pages will have more long-document features. IMac Intel 2 GHz, Macbook Pro 2 GHz, iBook G4 1 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8).

Word has too many features. One cannot find a feature in any product burdened by this many features. So, mostly, I use Pages, and whenever it doesn't do the trick, I use NeoOffice, available in the App Store.
